Start Without the Bureaucracy Noticing
Just as large enterprises have a hard time scuttling innovations in-between their silos, they also have a hard time stopping one person or one small team from local experiments. Use this to your advantage. How can you get a minimum viable product off the ground and into the hands of real customers or employees quickly?
Executing nimbly can be an innovatorâs biggest advantage. Large organizations donât move quickly. If you can get a real pilot launched in the time most organizations are still studying the problem, youâll be well positioned to have your approach seen and taken seriously by senior leadership. And the more youâve already completed, the less risky your innovation will seem next to alternatives that exist solely as PowerPoint presentations or memos.
You could spend the next six months finding data to answer an endless stream of questions and putting your project through formal approval processesâor you could get started. Addressing concerns head-on and using an organizationâs standard decision-making processes are important to building allies and showing respect for the culture of the organization, as we discuss throughout this book. But the key to successful bureaucracy hacking is also generating momentum, and one of the best ways to get momentum is to show success in the field.
You donât want to announce your new initiative too loudly. Instead, communicate strategically and slowly to avoid setting off too many defense mechanisms too quickly. The longer you can work quietly and prove success, the harder it will be for the bureaucracy to find you and stop you.
